Aromatherapy or the gentle art of healing is a branch of complementary medicine that is used for the preservation of health maintenance (preventive) and human psychophysical balance.
Aromatherapy is an ancient method of treatment based on the use of essential and herbal oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person’s mind, mood, cognitive function or health.
Ancient healers of China, Tibet, India and the Middle East have used aromatherapy. The medicine of ancient Egypt has almost entirely been based in aromatherapy, about 5000 years ago. As an integral part of Ayurveda is in use for thousands of years.
Aromatherapy knew the Greeks and Romans, and in the Middle Ages has assisted in preventing infection, particularly when there was a plague.
The term “Aromatherapy” was coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1928. He utilized the word to imply the therapeutic use of aromatic substances (essential oils). Since the beginning of Aromatherapy, the practice has encompassed human pathology and the treatment of different conditions (emotional and physical) with essential oils. As Aromatherapy developed into a practice it adopted an holistic approach which encompasses the body, the mind and the spirit (energy).
Aromatherapy is the most common form of caring touch therapy. This method combines the physical and emotional effects of gentle massage with medical and psychotherapeutic features essences of plants. Not only reduces stress and improves mood, aromatherapy even cures some less disorders, for example, massage with essential oils is particularly effective in treating problems faced by women, such as PMS, menopausal disorders, muscle aches, etc. Also, the use of scented lamp can relieve mild forms of anxiety and depression, insomnia, emotional disturbances, headaches, etc.
Psycho-aromatherapy aims to bring together the physiological effects of essential oils on the central nervous system, the subjective reaction to the smell of each person.
We all know that people recognize each other and are attracted by scent, as is well known that certain scents in us evoke pleasant or unpleasant feelings, and stirs memories … the truth is that when we feel the smell we almost never forget it because of its ability to stir our emotions.
Why is this so?
Scent molecules (essential oils) penetrate deep into the limbic system, in which is stored all our emotional memories, and all that belongs to the domain of the subconscious. Limbic system in the brain activates the pituitary gland (the most important endocrine gland, which is called the hormone-based gland) and hypothalamus (a part of the brain that controls the vegetative nervous system and through operation of pituitary endocrine system), which produce a full range of emotion associated with the memory stored deeply in subconscious.
Because of the deep connection between the olfactory nerves and emotions, we can point out the great value and importance with which odors affect our emotions. And because of this, we can say that scent molecules can quickly and effectively reach out to our subconscious and calm or stimulate specific emotional and mental reactions.
In this way, aromatherapy can be helpful in the transformation, calming and stimulating emotional, mental, and sexual response, due to its effective sedative, stimulating and aphrodisiac effects. This is especially effective in calming the emotions of anger, rage, fear, depression, sadness, anxiety, irritability, impotence and frigidity.
